Updated 4/15/2020
Good Afternoon Students and Families,

We hope you all managed to find some time to take a break last week, as we know how much it is needed especially during these often uncertain and stressful times.

Ms. Carter and I wanted to write a note to update you on where we are right now with regards to special education supports and services.

First, IEP and Eligibility Meetings will still occur virtually.  We have begun holding some of these meetings via Zoom.  If your child’s IEP is up for review prior to the end of the school year we will plan to meet via virtual platforms.  Similarly, as before you will receive the formal Meeting invitation, however via email, please respond letting us know if that time and date work for you.  If that does work, we will send out an email the day before the meeting explaining the process for the virtual meeting and provide the meeting link.

With regards to special education direct services, while services will not be occurring during our time away from school, we wanted to let you know the ways we plan to support you all, as well as our students.

First, we have been trying to make as many of your child’s class zooms as possible and have loved getting to see so many of their sweet faces.

Second, we are collaborating with all classroom teachers to provide visual aids and other resources that may support your student with some of the optional assignments they provided.  You may have already even seen some of these visuals sent via email or posted on class websites.

Third, in an effort to make ourselves available to you all and your child we will be setting up optional individual virtual conferences via the sign up link listed emailed to you.

If you wish to sign up for a time, this can be to simply catch up, answer questions, or provide any support on concepts or assignments provided by their classroom teacher.  We began by creating time slots for the rest of this month but will continue to update for the remainder of the school year.

Also, we would like to set up a weekly group Zoom call by grade level for any students that may be interested in touching base with myself or Ms. Carter as well as the peers they see in both of our classrooms.  We will send this link out weekly, however it is recurring.  Feel free to participate if you can!

Lastly, we have updated our websites with various links and documents that may be beneficial if you are looking for additional activities.  We know how overwhelmed you may already feel with resources currently being provided so this is not intended to overwhelm, but instead just optional supports if needed.

As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to us, anytime.

Thanks so much!

hope you are all doing well during this interesting and uncertain time.  Unfortunately,  we will not be returning to school in-person for the rest of this school year.  I am saddened by this news and already miss seeing you all!  I have enjoyed getting to see some of you via our Zoom meetings.

I know many of you may feel anxious during this time.
Please know that students and parents can send me an email anytime (leahyb@pwcs.edu).  I would love to hear from you all!  have set up Microsoft Teams and Zoom platforms as well.  Both platforms allow for video or phone calls.  Please let me know if you or your child would like to set up a time to meet and say hi for a few minutes during the upcoming weeks.

I have posted some resources to this page but please know they are not required.  Do not hesitate to reach out if you need anything.

Hope to talk with you all soon!

If you missed this phone call, and your student is in need of a computer for home learning, please contact your child’s school directly.
  3. SCHOOL BOARD MEETING - The Prince William County School Board will meet Wednesday, May 6. This will include a budget update and a pandemic update from the Superintendent. Patrons may learn more about the Board Meeting, and changes to the agenda required by the COVID-19 response.
  4. CONTINUITY OF LEARNING – PWCS began Phase 4 of the Continuity of Learning Plan* for all students on April 14. The Continuity of Learning Timeline provides more information on Phases 5 and 6 of the Learning Plan.
  5. GRADING – Marking periods one, two, and three will be graded. The sum of the grade for each of the three quarters will be divided by three to determine the final grade. Students may use the fourth quarter as an opportunity to work with their teachers on opportunities to improve their overall grade, and grades from the first three marking periods.
  6. REPORT CARDS – The third quarter ended April 24, and report cards will be available in The Hub by May 5. Middle and high school report cards will be mailed home. Parents of elementary students desiring a paper copy of the report card will receive information from their school.

*Due to the challenges related to this historical world health event and national emergency, it will be necessary for our teams to adapt how we support our students. As a result of Governor Ralph Northam’s order, PWCS schools must remain closed for the remainder of the school year. As we ensure the safety and well-being of students, PWCS can no longer offer its students an instructional day and services on IEPs, 504 plans, gifted education plans, and required EL services as it does when schools are open for instruction. In the place of instruction, our schools and team members are implementing the following plan to provide students with opportunities to learn, to challenge themselves, and to review and retain past lessons. All teachers will work collaboratively and use proactive strategies to continue engagement in learning for all students, including our English learners, special education, dually identified, and twice exceptional students providing the supports possible given the limitations of virtual learning under these conditions.

 – By order of the Governor of Virginia, all Prince William County Public Schools will remain closed to students through the end of the 2019-20 school year (June 2020), due to the health concerns caused by COVID-19 (coronavirus).

STAY SAFE AND HEALTHY – the highest priority now is to stay healthy. Parents and guardians should follow CDC Guidelines for physical distancing of children. If children meet outside of school in bigger groups, it can put everyone at risk. Please visit the Prince William County COVID-19 website to see additional local guidance.

PWCS AND PARENT PARTNERSHIP FOR HOME LEARNING – STUDENT LEARNING CONTINUES -  Although our school buildings and grounds are closed, learning is open, and staff and teachers are working daily. First and foremost, we want all families to know that the continued learning of our students is important to us.

  1. FOOD SERVICE – PWCS will continue to provide to-go meals from 9–11 a.m. at locations across the County. USDA has created a waiver for parents to be allowed to collect meals without their children. However, we are awaiting guidance from VDOE before we can implement this practice locally.  More details about meal service.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION - Prince William County Public Schools has opened online kindergarten registration for the 2020-21 school year. Find more information here.
